A French made pill, known as RU486, known by its chemical name "mifepristone," has recently been approved by the Federal Drug Administration for distribution in the United States. This new pill could be available by prescription in drug stores across the country by early spring of 1997.
Many medications have been introduced over the years which have greatly benefited humans and saved lives. The drug RU486 has as its purpose not the saving of life but the destruction of it.
RU486 is to be the first widely distributed pregnancyending pill. Starting this spring a pregnant woman can take RU486 in the privacy of her home and end the life of her unborn child. Two days later a second pill will cause strong uterine contractions to expel the lifeless child. All of this done in the name of convenience.
The Lord made clear his view concerning the value of the unborn in several passages. Jehovah spoke to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations" (Jer. 1:5). God can know us prior to birth.
Moses noted, "Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked" (Ex. 23:7). There is no more innocent life than the child still in the womb of its mother!
The book of Exodus shows God recognizes the unborn child as life equal in value to life already born. "If men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life (Ex. 21:2223). If men cause a woman to have a premature birth, but the baby lives, the man is to be punished as the husband may require and pay a fine as the judges decide; but if the baby is delivered dead, the one who caused it is to be put to death. Life for life.
God is the giver of life. The Lord can know and see a living human being while still in the womb. To take life in the womb by any means, including RU486, is murder!
Think of the ramification this new "death drug" brings to the lives of the unborn. With the availability of RU486, a woman will no longer have to think and plan carefully before a surgical procedure-always a sobering prospect. No longer will one have to go to the trouble of making and keeping an appointment with the a physician. In small towns across the country, where one would once have to drive to a larger town to receive an abortion, that will no longer be necessary. The convenience of the abortion pill will probably increase abortions many times.
Millions of babies are aborted each year. How many more will die
in 1997? It is a national disgrace and the tragedy of our time.
An entire generation of Americans has been murdered as an expedience.
The solution, of course, is not to answer violence with violence,
but to teach and implore and help people see the sinfulness of
taking unborn life. May our nation repent and cry out for forgiveness.
Let us all do all we can, within the limits of the law, to
erase this stain upon the soul of America.
