On Tuesday, January 30, 1996, the Judiciary Committee of the Tennessee State Senate took up discussions on Senate Bill No.2305. The bill prohibits same-sex marriages in Tennessee. It also prevents Tennessee from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

Under a legal rule called comity, marriages recognized by any state of the union must be sanctioned by all other states. The policy of denying marriage licenses to homosexual couples is under review in several states. If just one state approves homosexual marriage, it will become legal in all states because of comity of states.

The Bible condemns same sex marriage relationships as a sin (1 Cor. 6:9), and as a perversion of human sexuality (Rom. 1:26-27). Homosexual practice undermines traditional family values. From the beginning God intended that marriage involve one man and one woman for life.

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder (Matt. 19:4-6).

God fearing men and women should applaud legislators seeking to protect the family unit which is the basic building block of society and the church.

Every state should follow the lead of Tennessee and enact laws to preserve the family and outlaw every threat to the home as God would have it.

Several major United States corporations have begun to grant to same-sex couples the rights and privileges of those lawfully married. Among American companies that have announced a policy of giving recognition to homosexual couples is Hertz Rent A Car. In a policy revision statement Hertz announces: "A Domestic Partner is now included as an AO/AAO category and in the qualifications. A Domestic partner is defined as 'A partner of the same or opposite sex (not a relative) who permanently resides at the same address as the renter.'" Other U.S. companies recognizing "Domestic Partners," in one way or another include AT&T and Disney.

A protest is in order.
