The What And The How Of Restoration
By H. A. (Buster) Dobbs
The Bible teaches that Jesus built a church (Matthew 16:18).
Men inspired by the Holy Ghost warned that after the death of
the apostles of Jesus, the church would be lost to the world because
sinful men would abandon true religious faith (Acts 20:29-30;
2 Timothy 4:3-4; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12).
These prophecies of a falling away from the teaching of Jesus
and his apostles were fulfilled.
Imaginations and high things were exalted against a knowledge
of God. A dark day descended upon the earth. The truth was lost,
but still existed. Bibles containing the words authorized by Jesus
were in the world, but were either not read or not believed.
After many years of misery and religious blight, reformers attempted
to correct the false teaching of a disloyal church. Sad to say,
these noble attempts failed.
Religious leaders created authoritative creed books. They taught
"as their doctrine the commandments of men." This resulted
in the denominationalism of the modern world.
Now is a time for restoration.
Instead of attempting to reform corrupt religious systems, we
must go back to the teaching of Christ and his apostles. The Bible
alone will tell us what God wants us to be -- the uncontaminated
church of Christ.
Let us resolve to study the Bible with care and do exactly what
it tells us to do in precisely the way it tells us to do it. Let
us call Bible things by Bible names, and do all things in the
Bible way. Let us speak where the Bible speaks, and be silent
where the Bible is silent. Surely, surely God will approve those
who walk in the light of his word and rejoice to do his will.
No reasonable person can find fault with the idea of going back
to the fountain of life and drinking the pure water that is the
words of Jesus. This will not be criticized nor condemned. You
will be safe and right if you simply follow the Bible. And, what
is more, you will restore the church that Jesus built.
"If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if
any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth:
that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever" (1 Peter
4:11).
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower
of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth
away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is
the word which by the gospel is preached unto you" (1 Peter
1:24-25).
