Frequently Asked Question

Is the church a monarchy or a theocracy?

The church described in the New Testament is a monarchy, since it is ruled by Jesus is its head (Eph 1:22-23). It is a kingdom and Jesus is its king (See John 18:37 and Rev. 17:14).

If theocracy means a state that is ruled by religious authority, then the New Testament church is not a theocracy -- it is not of this world (John 18:36).

If by theocracy we mean the rule of God, then it is a theocracy and a monarchy for the reasons given above.
