Frequently Asked Question

Question:
What is the unpardonable sin?

Answer:
The apostle John said that the "blood of Jesus cleanseth (is cleansing) from all sin" (1 John 1:7). If the blood of the Lamb is cleansing from all sin, then there is no sin it will not cleanse.

John also says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Notice again that God will forgive the sins we confess and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I emphasize the word all. There is no unrighteousness God will not forgive.

John further says there is a sin unto death and we are not to pray for the person who commits such sin (1 John 5:16).

Therefore the sin unto death is any sin we will not confess and from which we will not turn. It is not a particular or specific sin, but it is any sin we stubbornly refuse to quit.

Going over this reasoning again:

  1. There is a sin unto death (1 John 5:17)
  2. God will forgive all unrighteousness, if we confess (1 John 1:9)
  3. Therefore the sin unto death is any sin we will not confess.
